- I have a USR Sportster 33600 V.34+ Internal modem (8/29/95 ROM), that I
- just upgraded from V.34 (4/18/95 ROM). When I connect at 28.8 kbps to the
- Ascend V.34 28.8 kbps modems at my university, I often experience pausing
- problems. By pausing, I mean the modem will all of sudden freeze in the
- middle of what I'm doing. Sometimes the modem regains carrier 15 seconds
- later, and sometimes the modem never regains carrier. Sometimes after the
- modem has regained carrier, I discover after I hang up that the speed was set
- down to 21600 (by doing ati6). Other times, the modem still has maintained
- 28.8 kbps after the pausing. I think this a problem with the Ascend modems
- on the other end, and not a phone line problem. My university has been
- constantly upgrading the Ascend modems and their software to combat the
- problem, and it has helped a lot, but not solved the problem. Many other
- people at my university have reported the problem, and these people are using
- USR and non-USR modems. I've been able to get really good 28.8 kbps
- connections before, that have been problem free, and lasted a long time:

- So this problem doesn't occur all the time, just most of the time. Another
- thing is my university has fiber-optic phone lines. Also, unless I force my
- modem to connect at a lower speed, the modem ALWAYS connects at 28.8 kbps.
- This, among other reasons, infers to me that my problem is not poor line
- conditions, but the Ascend V.34 28.8 kbps modems on the other end. I don't
- have this problem when I call other V.34 sites, only when I call my
- university. My solution to the problem is simply to FORCE my modem to
- connect at 26.4 kbps by adding &n13 to my init string. At 26.4 kbps or
- below, I have no problems at all. The problems ONLY occur at 28.8 kbps. My
- regular init string is:
-
- at&f1s10=255s54.6=1
-
- If I want to connect at 28.8 kbps and:
-
- at&f1&n13s10=255s54.6=1
-
- to connect at 26.4 kbps . I use Windows 95 dial-up networking, but I've
- noticed the problem in my COMM software also. The problem has existed with
- both my 4/18/95 (Sportster 28800 V.34) EPROM and my 8/29/95 (Sportster 33600
- V.34+) EPROM. (For those interested, I ordered my Sportster 33600 V.34+
- upgrade chip in late November, and got it on March 1, and I ordered it
- through tech support). However, my new Sportster 33600 EPROM has made things
- a little better, and more stable. With the new EPROM, it can maintain
- 28800/28800 more often (without setting it down to 21600/21600), and recover
- from the pausing more often. So the new improved V.34+ code has helped a
- little. My question is this: is there anything I can add to my init string
- to help the pausing problem? I know some problems can be solved by init
- string modifications, and I'm hoping there's something I can do to my init
- string to solve the pausing problem. Thanks to anybody who can help me.
